Viewing fax images
ucMax recommends viewing fax images in the tiff format. This format offers the best flexibility for printing and viewing, and also
downloads the fastest. Because some individuals install browser plug-ins or client software programs that interfere with the viewing of
tiff images, we offer the tiff image with both a ".tif" file extension and a ".ufx" file extension.
If you are trying to print a ucMax fax in Windows and it is coming out "black", please read the help section below entitled
Problems printing fax images.
The fax images can also be viewed in pcx, gif and bmp formats.
- tiff
- Windows 95/98/NT PCs come equipped with a software program called Imaging for Windows which can
display ucMax faxes. For more information, please read the help section entitled Obtaining the Windows Imaging software.
- Macintosh computers do not come equipped with software which can display ucMax faxes. For more information,
please read the help section entitled Obtaining a Macintosh tiff viewer.
- ufx - The ufx format is another way in which ucMax enables you to view tiff faxes. If you have a software
program for viewing tiff images that has problems viewing ucMax faxes, please read detailed
instructions on how to display ucMax faxes.
- pcx - Windows 95/98/NT machines come equipped with a program called Microsoft Paint which can
handle the pcx format. To find this software program, click the Start button, select Programs, select
Accessories, and click Paint.
- gif - Gif image formats can be handled by your browser directly, unless another software program is set up to
handle the gif format in place of the browser.
- bmp - Windows 95/98/NT machines come equipped with a program called Imaging for Windows which can
handle the bmp format. For more information, please read the help section entitled Obtaining the Windows Imaging software.
Problems printing fax images
Windows PCs come equipped with a software program called Imaging for Windows which can display ucMax faxes. If you
are using this viewer to print faxes and they come out "black", it may caused by an incompatibility between your printer and
the viewer. In this case we recommend downloading and installing another fax viewer. This viewer only works for Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0, however. Please click the name of your browser below to view
detailed instructions:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Download the Pagis Viewer by ScanSoft (1.5 MB, Version 2.06)
for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT 4.0.
- To install the Pagis Viewer, simply run the file (viewer.exe) downloaded in the previous step in the directory where you saved
it.
- Open a ucMax fax message in your Message Center.
- Click the ufx button below the fax thumbnail.
- Click the fax thumbnail.
- When the File Download window opens, select Open this file from its
current location, and click OK.
Note: If the "File Download" window doesn't open and instead another application starts, it probably means
that you have already set up another application to handle the ufx format. Please read the section below entitled
Overriding the ufx helper application with the Pagis Viewer.
- A window entitled "Open With" opens. If "XIFLITE" is on the list of programs, select it and click
OK. Make sure to check the box labeled Always use this program to open this file so this step does not
have to be repeated in the future.
Note 1: If "XIFLITE" is not on the list, click Other... to open the "Open With..."
window. Find the folder where you installed the Pagis Viewer in step 2 above (most likely this is in
C:\Program Files\Xerox\Pagis Viewer 2.0) and select "XifLite.exe". Click Open to return to the Open
With window. Click OK.
Note 2: If the "Open With" window doesn't open and instead another application is launched, it probably means
that you have already set up another application to handle the ufx format. Please read the section below entitled
Overriding the ufx helper application with the Pagis Viewer.
- Now Xerox's Pagis Viewer will open all of your ucMax faxes.
Netscape Navigator
- Download the Pagis Viewer by ScanSoft (1.5 MB, Version 2.06)
for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT 4.0.
- To install the Pagis Viewer, simply run the file (viewer.exe) downloaded in the previous step in the directory where you saved it.
- Open a ucMax fax message in your Message Center.
- Click the ufx button below the fax thumbnail.
- Click the fax thumbnail.
- When the Unknown File Type window opens, click Pick
App....
Note: If the "Unknown File Type" window doesn't open and instead another application is launched, it probably
means that you have already set up another application to handle the ufx format. Please read the section below entitled
Overriding the ufx helper application with the Pagis Viewer.
- When the "Configure External Viewer" window opens, click Browse.
- A window entitled "Select an appropriate viewer" will open. Find the folder where you installed the Pagis Viewer in step 2
above (most likely this is in C:\Program Files\Xerox\Pagis Viewer 2.0) and select "XifLite.exe". Click Open
to return to the "Configure External Viewer" window. Click OK.
- Now Xerox's Pagis Viewer will open all of your ucMax faxes.
Overriding the ufx helper application with the Pagis Viewer
If you have previously set up another application to view the ufx format you will need to override that application with the Pagis Viewer
so that you can use it to print your faxes correctly. Please follow these instructions:
- Open Windows Explorer.
- From the View menu, select Folder Options....
- Click the File Types tab.
- Click New Type... to open the "Add New File Type" window.
- Enter "ufx image file" in the Description of type box.
- Enter ".ufx" in the Associated extension box.
- Enter "image/x-ufx" in the Content Type (MIME) box.

- Click OK in the "New Action" window.
- Click Close in the "Add New File Type" window.
- Now Xerox's Pagis Viewer will open all of your ucMax faxes and will allow them to be printed correctly.

| Listening to voice mail messages |
|
|
|
How do I listen to a voice mail message?
In order to listen to your voice mail with your Web browser, your PC must have a sound card and speakers. If you have ever heard any type
of beep or noise coming from your PC, then you have a sound card and speakers already. Also, your browser must be set up to handle sound
files in the wav format (files with a ".wav" extension) by using an audio player, such as:
- Microsoft's Windows Media Player - This program should come pre-installed on all Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000 PC's and
will also work on some Windows 3.x and Macintosh PC's as well. If it is not installed on your PC, you can download it for free by
clicking here, and then clicking the "Download Windows
Media Player" link on the resulting page. From this page click the "System Requirements" link to find out if your
computer will run Media Player.
- Apple's QuickTime - This program works on Macintosh as well as Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000 PC's. You can download it
for free by clicking here. For system requirements, click
here.
- RealPlayer - This program by RealNetworks works on Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000, Macintosh, Unix, Red Hat Linux, and
SCO. You can download it for free by clicking here, and then clicking the
"RealPlayer Basic" link (RealPlayer Plus is not free). From this page click the "Minimum requirements" link to view
system requirements.
Which format should I select for listening to voice mail messages?
On the Message Center Options page (click Message Center on the left Navigation bar, and then click
Options below it), you can select the "Preferred format when listening to voice messages". Your choice will
affect how fast your message will download, and which audio player you can use to listen to it. The following
audio formats are available:
- Uncompressed wav - This is the default audio format. It takes the longest to download your voice mail message and
works with all three of the audio players mentioned above: Windows Media Player, Apple's QuickTime, and
RealPlayer.
- Compressed wav - This format is the quickest to download, but of the three audio players mentioned above it only
works with Media Player.
- Real Audio - This format plays as it downloads but only works with RealPlayer.
For more information on audio players, please refer to the section above entitled How do I listen to a voice mail
message?.
How can I prevent messages from timing out before I can listen to them?
This problem is often caused when you select Real Audio as the "Preferred format when listening to voice
messages" on the Message Center Options page. The default timeouts for RealPlayer cause it to timeout before ucMax can convert
a long voice mail message and begin to download it. You need to modify your RealPlayer settings to increase how long it will wait before
it reports a network connection failure. Please follow the instructions below:
- Click Message Center on the left Navigation bar of the ucMax window.
- Click on the voice mail message in the list. This will display the "Voice message" page.
- Click on "Listen to voice message" to display the Real Audio Player.
- If you are using RealPlayer version 6, click on the "Options" menu. If you are using RealPlayer version 7 or above, click
on the "View" menu.
- Select Preferences... from the menu to display the "Preferences" window.
- Click on the "Connection" tab.
- Click on the Network Time-Out Settings..." button at the bottom of the page to display the "Network Time-out
Settings" window.
- Enter 90 in the Connection time-out box.
- Click OK on the "Network Time-out Settings" window.
- Click OK on the "Preferences" window.

| Problems loading ucMax Web pages |
|
|
|
|
The cache is the location on your computer's hard disk where Web pages and files (such as graphics) are stored as you view them. This
speeds up the display of pages you frequently visit or have already seen, because your browser can open them from your hard disk instead
of from the Web.
If you are having a problem getting a ucMax page to load, it may be because your cache contains an old version of the page and is
trying to load that instead of the newer version. By clearing the cache you are forcing your browser to go to the Web and download a new
copy of your page.
To clear your disk cache, follow the instructions below for your preferred browser:
Windows Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Click the General tab.
- Click Delete Files... and click OK on the "Delete Files" popup window.
- Click OK on the "Internet Options" window.
Windows Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
- From the View menu, select Internet Options.
